Jets general manager Joe Douglas continued his mission to beef up the trenches to help Sam Darnold by picking Louisville tackle Mekhi Becton with the No. 11 pick of the NFL draft on Thursday night.
Douglas, bent on re-building the offensive line this offseason, scooped up the ultra-athletic Becton to protect Sam Darnold’s blind side for the next decade.
The top 10 unfolded perfectly for the Jets after teams like the Chargers and Cardinals opted for a quarterback and safety/linebacker, respectively, rather than beef up their offensive line needs.
Gang Green grabbed the 6-7, 364-pound mountain of a man after the Browns took Alabama tackle Jedrick Wills with the No. 10 pick.
“This draft is vital for us,” Douglas told SNY before the draft. “One good draft class can really change the trajectory of a franchise.”
The Giants took care of their franchise quarterback with the No. 4 pick. Dave Gettleman and rookie head coach Joe Judge scooped up Georgia’s Andrew Thomas to protect Daniel Jones’ blind side for the next decade.
The Bengals kicked off the first — and hopefully last — NFL virtual draft by predictably grabbing Heisman Trophy winning-quarterback Joe Burrow. Washington followed by investing in dynamic Ohio State edge rusher Chase Young. The Lions shopped the No. 3 pick before ultimately staying pat to select Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah, marking the first time in league history that the top three picks were college teammates at one point. The trio played together for Ohio State in 2017.
