FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys continued to smartly and methodically check off boxes of needs in free agency on Tuesday with the signings of running back Ronald Jones and offensive lineman Chuma Edoga to one-year deals.
They also re-signed defensive Dante Fowler to a one-year deal.
Jones is an option to replace departed star Ezekiel Elliott and to bolster the running back position behind starter Tony Pollard.
He has two Super Bowl titles on his resume in four years as a backup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and one year with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jones, who has career 4.4 rushing yards per carry average, had his best season in 2020 when he was the Buccaneers’ leading rusher with 978 yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 28 receptions for 165 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.
Edoga, a former 2019 third-round pick of the New York Jets, gives the Cowboys an option at left guard following the departure of Connor McGovern to the Buffalo Bills in free agency.
Edoga has played 26 career games with 13 starts, including one last year in his only season with the Atlanta Falcons. Edoga played left guard in Atlanta before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Fowler, who turns 29 in August, had a solid season with the Cowboys after notching just 7.5 sacks the previous two seasons with the Falcons.
He appeared in all 17 regular-season games for the Cowboys last year, recording 6.0 sacks, seven tackles for loss, and nine quarterback hits.
His return adds depth to a varied pass rush unit that includes Micah Parsons (13.5 sacks), Dorance Amstrong (8.5 sacks) and DeMarcus Lawrence (6 sacks).
The three signings to go along with the team’s previous moves — including trades for cornerback Stephen Gilmore and receiver Brandin Cooks and the re-signings of linebacker Leighton Vander Esch and safety Donovan Wilson — to shore up holes on the roster.
It allows the Cowboys to head into the 2023 NFL draft as pure as possible without having to force a need early.
They could still add a linebacker or a defensive lineman in free agency.
The Cowboys have picks in all seven rounds of the draft.
