Florida coronavirus cases jump pass 13,000

MIAMI — Florida’s Department of Health on Monday morning confirmed 974 additional cases of COVID-19, bringing the state total of confirmed cases to 13,324. There were 15 new deaths reported, bringing the statewide total to 236.

Of the total confirmed cases statewide, 12,925 are Florida residents and 399 are non-Florida residents who were diagnosed or isolated in the state. Weston Mayor Daniel J. Stermer is likely one of the new patients included in Broward County’s morning report. He tested positive for the disease late Sunday night and is in quarantine.

All but two of the new deaths were in South Florida, according to health records. Seven people between the ages of 49 and 80 died in Miami-Dade, raising the county death toll to 38. Six people between the ages of 57 and 96 died in Broward, raising the county death toll to 46.

A 100-year-old man died in Lee County from the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. As of Monday morning, he’s the oldest person in the state known to have died from COVID-19 complications. Health officials say it’s still unknown if he had any recent travel history and did not disclose if he had contact with someone who previously tested positive for the disease.

The oldest person known to have fallen ill with COVID-19 is a 104-year-old man in Palm Beach County. The man tested positive for the disease during the weekend, according to health records. Officials say he did not have any recent travel history but had come into contact with someone who tested positive for the disease.

The other death reported Monday was a 77-year-old man in St. Lucie County who officials say recently traveled to the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos. He did not have contact with anyone who tested positive for the disease.

There are 1,592 people hospitalized in the state
