Fantasy football 2023: Carolina Panthers preview

Knowledge is power and the greatest asset you can acquire in order to compete for a fantasy football championship.

Here’s your 2023 preview of the Carolina Panthers, the 22nd of 32 team profiles during draft season:

— 2023 Fantasy MVP: Adam Thielen, WR

Thielen (ADP: 128) could turn out to be a steal if his preseason chemistry with Bryce Young carries over into the regular season. The veteran has been a serviceable fantasy option for many years and the Panthers clearly believe he has something left to contribute — they gave him $14 million guaranteed on a three-year, $25 million deal. Indeed, he has caught 30 touchdowns since turning 30 in 2020.

— 2023 Fantasy Sleeper: Jonathan Mingo, WR

Mingo (ADP: 182) has strong, consistent hands and he’s hard to take down once he makes the catch. He had 10 receptions of 30-plus yards in 2022 (including two for more than 70 yards) at Ole Miss, and could be a mid-season add or worthwhile dynasty investment.

— 2023 Fantasy Bust: Miles Sanders, RB

The volume should be high enough for Sanders (ADP: 49) to produce serviceable numbers, but there’s more upside available where he’s being drafted. His breakout campaign in 2022 was primarily due to the Eagles’ dominant offense and Jalen Hurts’ ability to handcuff a defense.

— 2023 Fantasy Rookie to Watch: Bryce Young, QB

The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner showcased an elite level skill set for two straight seasons at Alabama — featuring special athleticism and intangibles with a dash of improv — this last year with fewer playmakers surrounding him. I have no doubt Young (ADP: 170) is capable of being special in the NFL, but the pertinent question may be for how long? He measured 204 pounds at the combine, but his playing weight is closer to 190 pounds. The Panthers coaching staff will have to scheme around Young’s size and he will have to become more mindful of the risk he’s taking once he exits the protective force field known as the NFL pocket.
