TAMPA, Fla. — Bucs receiver Chris Godwin has been ruled out for Sunday’s home opener against the Carolina Panthers, the team announced Saturday.
Godwin, who went into concussion protocol Wednesday after taking a hit late in Sunday’s 34-23 loss in New Orleans, had been cleared for non-contact football activity on Friday.
Godwin still had to perform non-contact football activities, such as position drills like running routes and catching a ball, with no recurrence of symptoms and show that his neurocognitive and balance testing had returned to baseline. He also had to get cleared by both a team physician and an independent neurologic consultant.
While Godwin clearly looked wobbly after taking a fourth-quarter hit from the Saints’ D.J. Swearinger, he didn’t show symptoms on Monday or Tuesday but woke up Wednesday feeling unwell.
Godwin was the Bucs’ leading receiver in last week’s game with 79 yards on six catches.
With Godwin and tight end Antony Auclair (calf) out for Sunday’s game, the Bucs promoted receiver Cyril Grayson and tight end Tanner Hudson from the practice squad. They also signed cornerback Mazzi Wilkins, a USF product, from the practice squad.
