A fire which broke out at a block of flats in west London is now under control, firefighters have said.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were sent to the scene following calls to a fire in Darfield Way, Notting Hill, near to Grenfell Tower, shortly before 11.40am.

A balcony on the 12th floor of the building was alight, firefighters said.

The fire is now under control, but crews were set to remain on site this afternoon.

London Fire Brigade said it had taken 27 calls about the fire, the cause of which is not yet known.

The Met Police said officers were assisting at the scene. There were no reports of any injuries.

Samantha Findley, 41, who lives in the flats, said she smelled what she thought was burning plastic in the tower block and immediately left her home on the 10th floor.

“I smelled it,” she said. “I thought ‘let me get out, I’m out’. I grabbed my keys, my phone. I’m out. I’m not seeing where it is or anything. I’m out.

“I was concerned. I was very fearful.”

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea said it had opened up a community hall at nearby Frinstead House, offering supplies such as water and nappies to residents.

The block of flats is just a few minutes’ walk away from Grenfell Tower, where 72 people died following a huge fire in 2017.
