The Federal Court has extended an order preventing the deportation of a Tamil family to Sri Lanka until 4:00pm tomorrow.
Tamil asylum seekers Nadesalingam Murugappan, known as Nades, and Kokilapathmapriya Nadesalingam, known as Priya, and their two Australian-born children have been detained on Christmas Island since last month.
An urgent court injunction sought by their lawyers in August had prevented the family from being deported to Sri Lanka.
Lawyers today have been arguing over the process the Minister took in denying a protection visa for two-year-old Tharnicaa.
Earlier this month, Federal Court Justice Mordecai Bromberg ordered the Immigration Minister to provide more evidence to support claims the youngest child has no right to protection.
