Four children dead, one missing after Ky. Amish family’s buggy overturns in creek

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Despite searching all night, emergency crews had not yet found a missing fifth child Thursday morning after four other youths died when they were swept away in the current of a swollen stream in Bath County.

Five children and one adult were dumped in the water when a buggy pulled by a horse tried to cross a low water bridge, according to Kentucky State Police.

The adult was able to make it to the bank and call for help, police said. By 1 a.m. Thursday, four of the children had been found dead.

State police Trooper Scott Ferrell said Thursday that the search for the fifth continued overnight.

Authorities were notified of the accident about 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, he said. The buggy overturned when the horse lost its footing.

The children were thought to be siblings, he said.

Many agencies helped state police in the search. Those included the Kentucky National Guard, Bath County sheriff’s department, Owingsville police, Bath County EMS, Owingsville fire and rescue, Salt Lick Fire Department, Olympia Fire Department, Farmers Search and Rescue, Bath County emergency management, Morgan County Search and Rescue, Montgomery County Search and Rescue, Montgomery County sheriff’s office, Montgomery County emergency management and Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Biden chooses vetting team as running mate search ramps up

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Thursday named a panel of supporters to vet his running mate.

With the presidential campaign largely on hold because of the coronavirus crisis, a significant amount of attention is focused on whom Biden will pick to be his running mate. He has pledged to select a woman and is under pressure from party elites as well as grass-roots supporters to pick a woman of color.

Some of the potential candidates include Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota; Rep. Val Demings of Florida; Govs. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico; and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

While it is questionable how much a running mate can improve a presidential hopeful’s prospects, the selection process always draws great media scrutiny because it is viewed as a lens through which to view a candidate’s priorities.

And the ages of running mates may hold special relevance this year, given that Biden is 77 and President Donald Trump is 73.

The Biden campaign announced Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti; former Connecticut Sen. Christopher J. Dodd; Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware; and former Biden counsel Cynthia C. Hogan as members of the selection committee that will help the former vice president name his running mate.

South LA pastor arrested outside Mayor Garcetti’s house on suspicion of stalking

LOS ANGELES — A South Los Angeles pastor was arrested this week outside the home of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on suspicion of felony stalking after several days of demonstrating on the Windsor Square block.

Bail was set for Sherman Manning, who leads the Yes We Can! Worship Center, at $150,000, according to Los Angeles Police Department arrest records. As of Thursday afternoon, he had not been charged, according to the district attorney’s office.

Manning said that for several days he had been walking up and down the block outside the Windsor Square residence, calling for urgent action to house homeless people on skid row during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In one video broadcast on Facebook, Manning said, “The homeless have no place in which to shelter — and they have been left for dead.” He said he wants the mayor to commandeer hotels and the convention center to house people. At one point, Manning said that three homeless people from skid row had joined him and slept outside on the Windsor Square block.

Manning said he was “absolutely not” doing anything to harass before his arrest. One video recorded before he was arrested Tuesday shows a woman accompanied by police officers outside the Garcetti residence, complaining that Manning was terrorizing her daughter and mentioning that he was convicted of rape.

“Leave my house!” she shouted.

The pastor replied that he had been convicted and spent decades in prison, bu
